Mahj for Beginners

  • Not a thing. Most people who book a lesson have never touched a tile, or have played a handful of times and never felt sure of what they were doing. You don’t need to study, buy anything, or prepare. Just show up ready to play — we’ll handle the rest.

  • Lessons happen in your home, around your own table. We regularly teach across the Dallas area, including:

Dallas · University Park · Highland Park · the Park Cities · Farmers Branch · Addison · Carrollton · Plano · Richardson · Allen · Frisco · McKinney · Irving · Las Colinas · The Colony · Coppell · Grapevine · Flower Mound

Travel within 10 miles of 75229 is included. We’re happy to come farther for a small travel fee — not sure if you’re in range? Just ask.

  • A lesson covers up to four players at the base rate, and we can go up to eight (just $50 per additional player). Mahjong is best learned in a group — it’s a social game, and you’ll pick it up faster with friends around the table. Got more than eight? Let’s talk — we’ll bring a second teacher and structure the lessons in a way that is optimized for a larger group.

  • Just the table and the people. We bring everything else — tiles, racks, cards, and all the materials. You bring the table; we’ll bring the game.

  • Two hours. Every lesson ends with guided play (included in the two hours), so you’re not just learning — you’re actually playing, from the very first session.

  • Not to learn. We bring everything you need for your lessons, including an NMJL card for each student to use during the lesson. Once you’re hooked (and you will be), we’re happy to point you toward the best ways to purchase the card(s) of your choice.  We can also add on a card for each student to keep to the lesson price, if you’re interested in providing a take-home favor for each student – just ask us!

  • Quick Start (one lesson) is perfect if you want to learn the essentials and be able to join a casual game with friends. Foundations (three lessons) is our most popular — enough time to build real confidence, learn to read the table, and feel ready for almost any friendly game. Strategy Series (four lessons) adds a fourth session on strategy — pivoting, defense, and the power tiles on this year’s card — for players who want to sharpen their edge. Not sure? Tell us where you’re starting and what you’re hoping for, and we’ll help you choose.

If you’re looking for a more advanced option or to work on becoming tournament-ready, reach out to talk!  We can design a lesson package that’s right for you and your table.

  • American mahjong, played with the National Mahjong League card. We teach in a casual, social style — enough structure that you’ll be comfortable at almost any casual table, without the pressure of strict tournament rules. (And if you ever want to go deeper into competitive or tournament play, we can point you in the right direction or arrange for a more advanced lesson series.)

  • Absolutely! That’s some of our favorite work. We can teach a lesson and let your group keep playing afterward, or build something around a birthday, a shower, or just a standing group that wants a new thing to do together. We can also connect you with some of our favorite “girls’ night” vendors who can supply the food, drinks, and décor.  Let’s talk about what you have in mind.

  • Absolutely! Plenty of people come for lessons, having played casually for years and wanting to finally feel confident — to understand the why behind the moves, sharpen their strategy, or get comfortable with the parts they’ve always fudged. If you’ve already learned with us but want to sharpen your skills, we can also arrange a refresher or extra guided play.

  • Use the “Let’s Connect” link above to reach out and tell us a little about your group - how many people, where you are, and what you’re hoping to get out of your lesson series. We’ll help you pick the right series and find a time that works.
